How did the Empire shape London’s economy, culture and geography in 1700s and 1800s?
By 1880s the City of London became the largest city of the planet regarding population reaching over three million inhabitants by 1815 (Allen, 2009). The influx of population was the primary result of emigration of people coming to seek better opportunities during the industrial revolution. The Irish were the majority of inhabitants while the rest of the population comprised of people from France, Italy, Spain as well as German the inhabitants of London during the 1800s had emigrated due to both economic and political factors such as the war in their home country. Most were made to flee from the harsh economic and political disorder during the revolution of 1830 to 1848 (Mokyr, 2010). .
Other minor communities in London during 1800 include the Chinese, Jews, Indians as well as the African sailors who were residing and working on the riverside. The influx of the population resulted to a subsequent decline in sanitation, food as well a construction standard. The late 1800s saw the population double to more than seven million inhabitants. The latter was as a result of the great revolutions as well as political upheavals in Europe which saw the emigration of Russians, Polish, French, and the Italians (Allen, 2009) .
