Why were the 14th and 15th Amendments passed?
The 14th amendment was passed to address the rights of citizens of the United States and to ensure the law protected their rights well without discrimination. Such was in response to contentions concerning former slaves. The first clause, which set clear about citizenship, was passed to nullify the 1857 Supreme Court decision, which barred slaves of African native from gaining citizenship. The clause on equal protection was enacted to ensure universal security to all people in the united states with discrimination, whether citizens or non-citizens. It was, therefore, to address discrimination witnessed in the United States against people of different ethnic groups, especially the witnessed violence against black people majorly in the southern states.
Section 2 of the 14th amendments were passed to ensure the slaves' population in a state were added to the free folk and given a weight for apportionment purposes by giving freed slaves the right to vote. Section 3 of the 14th amendment was to bar unrepentant former confederacy who took part in the 1865 civil war from taking the oath of office since they had violated their first oath of office. Also, section 4 was passed to ensure the law's conformity concerning the public debt. Besides, it also set the record straight that the United State would not be liable to pay for the loss of slaves and debts accumulated by the confederacy.
