Women in the Civil War
Introduction
During WWII, after all of the men went to war, who was left to maintain the economic and social function? To maintain the progress of society, women were then to take over and act in their place. The departure of men to the war caused a severe shortage of labor force working in the industries. Females' labor, therefore, was the only solution to curb this and to ensure that war was supported. They supported the overall economic and social status.
Contribution of women in WWII
The shortage of employment services due to WWII forced women to leave their homes to go to the industries to ensure continuous supplies. They were first involved in building warplanes, transporters, ships, and ammunition and explosives. Young females acted as auxiliaries in the warfare activities, armed forces, and public fortifications. This was in addition to their work of managing their households. Due to many men leaving to fight in the battle, women were enforced to work on the "Home Front" in the security plants. They were then involved in the public conveyance due to the shortage of men in that arena. Here, they acted as drivers of fire engines, trains, and trams and even to some point as streetcar "conductorettes."
