The rapid growth and proliferation of technology over the last decade have facilitated extensive social communication over vast geographical regions. The technological advancement has created an opportunity for social engineering practices in which opportunists manipulate users and systems for malicious gain. According to Williams, Beardmore, and Joinson (2017), these malicious individuals use persuasive techniques to defraud users of money and steal personal information. The menace of internet fraud is prevalent since the perpetrators create scenarios that allow them to collect personal information. These socially engineered techniques, however, can be avoided through the use of firewalls, two-step authentication, and device fingerprinting. Thus, in this article, firewalls, two-step authentication, and device fingerprinting shall be discussed as methods used to avoid fraud on the internet.
