Introduction
The interplay between interior design and mental health is significant even though designers ignore it in most cases, with the relationship between a housing interior design and mental being bidirectional (Connellan et al., 2013). The housing interior design plays a crucial role in raising an individual’s morale and greatly influences an individual’s happiness level within the house. The physical elements of houses broadly impact the occupant by enabling him/her to efficiently carry out tasks and create an atmosphere influencing the individual's feelings in the house. Research on sick building syndrome has depicted that inadequate ventilation, the presence of toxins and house contamination leading to poor air quality in the house may lead to health complications (Connellan et al., 2013). Additional side effects are related to mental health, which affects the majority of house occupants. TOKI is a housing agency backed by the Turkish government for mass housing to solve low and middle-income group’s housing problems (Devrim, 2016). Research on sick building syndrome has shown that poor indoor air quality due to toxins, contamination or inadequate ventilation could lead to various physical health complaints (Friesinger et al., 2019). Thus, in its attempts to solve the housing problems, TOKI also needs to place much emphasis on the houses' interior design. The emphasis on the housing interior design in terms of the color used, the lighting effects, and the decoration are important as they'll enable an occupant to achieve harmony with his/her interior house environment. This research endeavors to provide an understanding of the housing interior design effects on mental health.
Research Questions
The research questions that I seek to answer include;
1 What is the typical housing interior design for the TOKI designed houses?
2 What are the positive effects of the interior housing designs on Mental Health?
3 What are the negative effects of the interior housing designs on Mental Health?
