Americans with Disability Act Name Instructor Americans with Disability Act The Americans with Disability Act (ADA) is a revolutionary civil rights statute that accorded individuals with disabilities similar rights to other citizens (Switzer, 2003). The law prohibits any form of discrimination against individuals with disability and seeks to promote inclusion of the physically challenged into the community by allowing them access rights to buildings and other venues (Switzer, 2003). The law was enacted in 1990 by the US Congress and amended in 2008. The law provides that physically challenged individuals should be granted access to all public entities as well as public transportation, public accommodations and facilities, and telecommunication facilities (Switzer, 2003). All public places and facilities are required to comply with the law regarding customizing their buildings to allow access for the disabled individuals who use devices for their mobility (Switzer, 2003). The law has been very effective in influencing the general attitude of the society towards the physically challenged individuals. The physically challenged individuals now have access to education since all public institutions are expected to comply with the provisions of the ADA (Switzer, 2003).
