Citizen Kane introduced major cinematic advance on various fronts in film making. Perhaps a huge influence came from its use of flash backs and inconsistent story telling. Citizen Kane follows the life of Charles Kane, a rich newspaper mogul who had recently died. The movie is set upon the death of Kane and follows a series of flashbacks in an effort to conceal the meaning of "Rosebud”, the last word from Kane. The movie employs heavily on the use of flashbacks and inconsistent of storytelling. This way, Citizen Kane portrays a longer period of realistic telling thus allowing the characters to be able to age just as the story moves on. Hence, other than telling the story in perhaps a linear chronological way, the story of Kane is able to overlap segments thus adding more information as each of the narrator tells his or her story. The use of flash backs provides a perspective of the characters who are either aging or forgetful hence casting doubt on the reliability of their memories. Basically, it involves unreliable narrators whose interpretations plus opinion affect the story. They technique then succeeds in alluding more questions than answers on the character and life of Charles Kane and the meaning of the word "Rosebud”.
