Peace officers play an important role in enhancing and enforcing law and order in a specific jurisdiction. Policing has changed and evolved over the past few decades which had directly revolutionized the functionality and mission of peace officers. Texas is among the regions that have focused on ensuring there are peace and harmony among its citizens. For that reason the local government has implemented measures and structures of community policing which includes laying out strategies and policies that govern the recruitment, conduct, and contract termination for peace officers. The current study will have a profound overview of the rules and required documents set by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) on becoming a police officer.
Part 1: Requirements to Become a Peace Officer
Texas Commission on Law Enforcement has set requirements on becoming a police officer. First, it is imperative for an individual seeking enrollment in any law enforcement course to have file documentation that is subject to scrutiny and examination by the commission before acceptance that indicates an individual is eligible for admission. The state has also set an age limit for enrollment such that a candidate has to be over 21 years of age. However, privileges are given to 18 years and above applicants that have an associate degree or over 60 credit hours in a recognized university or college. Additionally, to be accepted with less than 21 years of age, a candidate has to prove that they received an honorable discharge from the armed forces of the United States with at least two years of active service.
Education background is also paramount for TCOLE as they recruited peace officers. First, an applicant must have passed the General Education Development (GED) showcasing high school graduation level. Additionally, an applicant needs to have a high school diploma, except for armed forces that were discharged honorably and served at least 24 months in the United States Armed Forces. According to Erik Fristvold (2021), it is imperative for law enforcement personal to have a good educational background for purposes of acquiring good leadership skills and also effective decision making.
