In the United States of America, some people argue that buying and holding guns is an individual right provided by the federal constitution through the second amendment. Since ratification in 1791, the second amendment has been a source of debate regarding interpretation and meaning with some people proposing more strict gun controls and others opposing them. The issue of gun control is of national concern in the United States of America with major political parties having different views on the matter. However, due to the increasing crime rates in individual states, more tight laws should be implemented on how to acquire, hold, and use firearms.
The Democratic Party is one of the national parties in America, which supports background checks before granting a license to bear firearms. The party cites escalating gun violence to support their argument on background checks indicating that some people such as those previously convicted of felony should not have access to firearms. GOP, the ‘Grand old party’, on the other hand supports the conservative view that the right to bear firearms is a fundamental right provided by the constitution. The constitution party also like the Republican Party supports the second amendment and strongly opposes any changes to the law.
One of the outstanding issues in the recently concluded national election was gun control with the Democratic Party as expected supporting background checks and the Republican Party opposing any changes. Although the gun issue is very sensitive in America, it is not easy to point out the side that has the majority support. For instance, in the just concluded elections, Hillary Clinton, who was supporting background checks won by the majority of voters and Donald Trump, who was against any changes to the gun laws won most of the states.
