The problem of antibiotic resistance is increasingly becoming a challenge across the globe. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) (2020), the rise in the cases of antibiotic resistance poses a threat to global health, food security, and the development of countries in different parts of the world. One of the leading causes for the occurrence of antibiotic resistance, according to Martens and Domain (2017), is the application of antibiotics in the promotion of growth and disease prevention for animals. The authors indicate that up to 30 different antibiotics have been added to the water and food for animals to prevent different diseases and enhance growth. Martens and Domain (2017) further assert that today, at least 50% produced globally are applied to animal growth. Over time, exposure to antibiotics through the consumption of animal-based products leads to the development of resistance.
One of the strategies considered vital in the fight against antibiotic resistance is the development of vaccines for various pathogenic bacteria, especially those likely to develop resistance. According to Martens and Domain (2017), there has been a significant reduction in the number of child mortalities associated with pneumococcal diseases since introducing the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine.
