Proper nutrition, healthy lifestyle as well as adequate physical activity are some of the basic protective factors against many forms of diseases including hypertension, cardio-metabolic diseases, various forms of cancer and obesity together with other related diseases (Phillips, Kelly-Weeder, & Farrell, 2015). Maintenance of a healthy lifestyle among the young adults and the youths is very closely associated with several behavioral and protective factors together with a diverse range of risk factors. Protective factors work to reduce probabilities of getting involved in any risky behaviors through provision of models of positive behaviors, while risk factors have always worked to raise the probability of indulgence into risky behaviors. This paper focuses on College students and nutrition together with all the issues that are involved in maintaining healthy living while in school. The nursing process aimed at care provision that is designed to ensure that the most excellent care is provided is also discussed.
College students and nutrition
Many students in college faces plethora of challenges with issues of healthy living even as they juggle around their busy schedule with the desire of staying healthy through intakes of proper diet and maintaining body exercise. Other related issues that they always have to grapple with would include the struggles to maintain proper mental health as well as maintaining proper relationships alongside the normal school routines.
With the students having a limited budget and a constant access to the fast food joints throughout the day, eating right would be a very daunting challenge to most college students. It is advised that the ability to prepare one’s own food would be the best approach towards healthy living. This would help the students have a well planned healthy meal throughout the week and would discourage them from indulging into the consumption of unhealthy meals (Pettit & DeBarr, 2011). Properly planned diets that are properly managed and implemented would mean healthy lifestyle among the college youths. Also proper time management that would allow for at least some time for effective bodily exercise on a daily basis would be very healthy for the college youths. Avoiding over indulgence in alcohol and hard drugs would help the youth take control of their health and prevent opportunistic diseases. The youth can adopt proper influences and avoid bad company.
The youth would always find themselves having several minor meals between major meals and continually eat uncontrollably and subconsciously. Other behaviors like Binge eating that involves consumption of a lot of food within very short time that is associated with a loss of control in the entire eating patterns. This would be regarded as a serious eating disorder that would lead to several complications including obesity. While full syndrome of eating disorder would be very rare, there is a general increases in the number of eating disorders among college students (Korn, Gonen, Shaked & Golan, 2013). This has increased the risks of contracting various health complications that are associated with poor eating behavior.
The problems associated with nutritional complications among the college students would require bottled-up clinical approaches that adopts the contemporary initiatives aimed at correcting any defects resulting from these conditions. Nutritional complications among College students would be considered as a primary health care issue that would require a well organized step-by-step intervention initiative that starts from assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation with an aim of providing sustainable care to the victims.
The Nursing Process
A step-by-step process of assessing, diagnosis, planning, implementing and evaluating a health care initiative would be necessary as an intervention process. Assessment of the nutritional disorder would be looked at in the lenses of nutritional behaviors of the student, the eating habit, and ability to participate in physical exercises, assessment of the diet as well as the demographic analysis of the individual student (Holmes & Mason, 2014). The assessment would be aimed at identifying the possible causes of the disorder, the trends and the current situation.
