How the Camerawork in the movie creates a particular perception of the world
Cinematography is a crucial consideration for filmmakers because they use it in creating a certan perception in the viewers. Notably, this is the practical part of film-making. At this point, the production team uses various techniques to ensure that they create the product. One of those approaches is the use of space, and this is achieved with camera management tricks. Camera management is not a knowledge that it is static because it depends on the nature of the film. For instance, shooting science fiction movies is different from those that are based on authentic narrations. The use of space between these two genres is different. Observably, this is the case with Enter the Void, which oscillates from real life to an imaginary one. At the beginning of the film, Oscar is real, but in the subsequent scenes, he is a spirit; these situations require appropriate camera positioning.
Real-life contexts usually possess concrete situations. In this case, when Oscar is vowing to her sister Linda that they had promised to be together, the camera captures actual objects (Noé, 2009). Viewers can see the sun and the open field. In this case, the camera allows the audience to watch the events from their perspective. When watching such a scene, the conversations with the sister are real. For this reason, the role of the camera is to make these scenes to be authentic. The movement of the camera observes the rhythm of the conversation. It shifts to a speaker after the other. Observably, the camera sequence is not dramatic because the events being covered are accurate, and in some cases, they are typical human experiences.
However, the camera management approaches in the subsequent scenes of the film change. For instance, when Oscar is immersed in the drug business, he lives an extraordinary life, secretive and always sensitive to anything around him. In these scenes, the camera person used an appropriate style by ensuring that some of the moments were covered in a flash. For instance, Lim, D. (2020) reveals that Oscar’s life after getting involved in drugs shifted from average to secrecy. This is an aspect that is highlighted by the camera management practices. In the scenes such as when he visits entertainment places, the scope of the camera is reduced. In this case, the focus is on Oscar alone. Ostensibly, this reveals how he has become a person of interest, and the concern is about his safety. When he enters these entertainment areas, the camera highlights all his moves. Significantly, the camera uses this limited space to denote people's challenging lives in secretive deals.
Another critical use of the camera is during Oscar’s existence as a spirit. In this case, the camera does not focus on events, but it is about Oscar’s perception. The camera is focused on ensuring that the audience sees things in the film from the eyes of Oscar. It is not about the acts in the movie but what Oscar goes through as a spirit. Significantly, this camera's use is because human beings cannot decipher things of the spiritual world. Therefore, the camera has to allow Oscar to control the camera.
Enter the Void is one of the films that demonstrate efficient use of the camera. Notably, the film entails three sequences that relate to reality, deceptive and spiritual world. In the three series, the camera ensured that the differences in these types of life are highlighted.
