Genetics and Reproduction
In my opinion, sexual reproduction is the better than asexual reproduction. This is because sexual reproduction provides genetic diversity since sperms and eggs produced contain different combinations of genes compared to the parent organism. In the case of female copperhead snakes that have the ability to reproduce asexually, there is limited genetic diversity because creation of an offspring is achieved from one parent. It is important to note that asexual reproduction results in a clone parent or an offspring with identical DNA as the parent. The value of genetic diversity is impaired through asexual reproduction and the results are no variation from generation to generation in a species population (Hartfield, Wright, & Agrawal, 2016). The process of acquiring genetic diversity, there must bedifferent genetic combination from both species. For instance, the female copperhead snakes will lack genetic diversity because of similar phenotypes and genetic composition forming the offspring.
Gregor Mendel's law of  segregation  in genetics, for any particular trait, the pair of alleles  of genes from each parent should separate with one alleles passing from each parent on to an offspring. This is not the case when we look into the asexual reproduction in female copperhead snakes. The principle of segregation explains meiosis and sexual cell formation that occurs in sexual reproduction (Hartfield, Wright, & Agrawal, 2016). Moreover, the only source of variation in asexual organisms is mutation and stands an ultimate source of variation in sexual organisms. It is important to note that during the formation of gametes two alleles from each parent are responsible for a trait separate from each other. Therefore, the offspring will have diversity since the genetic formation entails genetic traits from both parents.
Female copperhead snakes have been biologically confirmed to reproduce asexually. However, the Gregor Mendel's principle of segregation depicts that it is possible for a parent to have two different alleles for a certain gene with each one being a copy of a given chromosome (Hartfield, Wright, & Agrawal, 2016). Therefore, these two alleles will be separated by the process of meiosis where the two copies of each chromosome are located on the chromosomes. This is followed by the process of self-segregation by the alleles.Â
