Visiting distant places has become common occurrence especially among young civilised people. However, although visiting new places have some advantages, some scholars have as well linked it to some regrettable disadvantages. Therefore, the understanding of some of the advantages and setbacks of visiting far-flung places is significant in helping modern scholars make appropriate decision regarding their distant visits.
Singh, (2008) observe that visiting distant places is useful in broadening individual minds and thinking capacity. Visiting foreign places is also essential in widening one living experiences. In addition to advancing individual exposure, visiting far-away places grants individuals with the opportunity for reassuring and re-examining their lives. Foreign travels also help visitors learn and appreciate foreign language and culture. In an ideal situation, learning foreign culture and languages offers intellectual stimulation and meaning to unique cultural practices. Furthermore, learning new language offers new opportunities for meeting and interacting with people from different culture and social backgrounds.
On the other hand, Van Hyfte (2009) states that visiting distant places may result to various social and health challenges such as homesickness. Homesickness is particularly common among individuals who visit foreign areas for a long time. Distant visitors also encounter the challenge of huge unforeseen expenses. Contrary to local travels, visiting far-off places result to huge unplanned expenses that emerge from activities such as accommodation and travel. Distant visitors are also likely to encounter the challenges of hooliganism. Attack by crooks is most common among visitors with the problem of using and understanding foreign language (Talwar, 2006).
