From inventions and innovations, technology has advanced to a level where it is possible to manipulate genes. This manipulation is possible through genetic engineering. Today, it is possible to develop transgenic animals that are used to test new drugs. Even more interesting, is the idea that is possible to modify a baby genetically. The debate on whether it is moral to engineer a baby genetically is bound to continue. This essay discusses the instance at which engineering a child genetically is wrong morally.
Genetic engineering is about manipulation and modification of genes. The parent or the doctors will be able to select specific genes that they want the baby to have and remove those that they do not want. People have argued that this will affect the generations to come. Loss of some traits will happen, in the long run, and the world will be full of individuals who do not possess certain genes. It is from this view that it is not morally right.
Genetic engineering will, in the long, create a great division between the "master-race" and the ordinary people. The master-race here describes those individuals who will be produced by genetic engineering. This scenario is bound to create conflicts and thus is not morally right. Also, it not morally acceptable to give the society the task of choosing the ideal appearance that will be acceptable in future.
Genetic engineering will contravene the religious beliefs of individuals. Most people believe that a divine being created human beings. Through this engineering, it will be possible to produce babies with desired characters. The interference with the beliefs of people is what makes genetic engineering morally wrong.
