Changing Child Poverty Name Institution Changing Child Poverty Child poverty is a pertinent issue in our society and has been for a while. Child poverty may arise from various factors some of which include children being raised in poor families, children being left orphans because of disease and other death causalities, lack of government resources to address certain societal imbalances and so on. The change theory by Lewin can be applied in a model in order to alleviate the problem of child poverty. This model involves three stages namely; unfreezing, movement and refreezing (Lewin, 1951). In order to unfreeze this problem a careful study of the various factors resulting in child poverty should be undertaken. The unfreezing phase involves the unsettling of the current situation to show the need for change and designing as well as planning the change methodology. The next step is the movement phase which involves the implementation of the change methodology designed in the unfreezing phase. Once the change has been achieved, then the refreezing step is incorporated to ensure that the changes are long lasting. The SWOT analysis matrix can be very useful at the unfreezing phase of the Lewin model. This analysis can be used to identify the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats of the methodology chosen in trying to alleviate the issue of child poverty. Applying the SWOT analysis matrix to a methodology to solve the problem of child poverty, we can identify the following; one of the strengths of a given methodology employed to fight child poverty may be how the process generates the necessary funding and other resources for the cause. One weakness maybe how the funds may be best managed or mismanaged in addressing the issue of child poverty. Any methodology adopted will most likely have an opportunity in exploiting the general public goodwill in trying to alleviate the issue of child poverty. Legal restrictions such as child adoption rules and changes in child protection laws would pose a threat to any child poverty alleviation program. Once a proper program has been analyzed using the SWOT matrix at the unfreezing stage then implementation can be conducted in the movement phase and if the desired result according to the program is achieved then the refreezing phase is initiated to consolidate the change. Those responsible for implementing change have to consider many factors including innovation, environmental factors as well as human factors (Ensminger, 2008) In trying to apply the changes mentioned above, ethical threats such as that of conflict of interest may arise where one may be tempted to personally benefit themselves, either directly or indirectly as result of their involvement in the change process at the risk of the program’s success. A second ethical issue that may arise maybe in regard to the degree of fairness in the application of the child poverty intervention program; where the problem is widespread questions as to who is more deserving than the other may arise and this may foster further inequalities if not well addressed. According to the Ethical standards for Human Service Professionals adopted by the National Organization for Human Services (2015), Human service professionals are required to provide their services without discrimination of whatever form. According to the code of ethics of the National Association of...
