Counseling has been crucial seemingly since the dawn of society. From grandparents and parents advising children to community leaders providing guidance, counseling seems to have always been a natural part of human society. As the world becomes increasingly busier, people need support, mental help, and means to overcome pain. Counseling as a taking therapy helps individuals overcome mental illnesses, emotional pain from the past and develop coping mechanisms for the future.
Counseling helps people explore their behavior and moods in a safe place with mental health professionals' help. Counselors listen to clients and provide a new perspective on issues facing their patients. A therapist functions as a non-judgmental voice that helps clients resolve emotional issues (Asher, Gerkin, & Gaynes, 2017). Mental health professionals work with their clients to uncover the root causes of their problems and help them make positive changes in their lives. Therefore, counseling gives people a better understanding of their own emotions, better ways to convey these emotions, promote one’s self-esteem and outlook on life.
Mental health is useful to anyone struggling with emotional difficulties, life changes, and mental health concerns. The US continuous to record an increasing number of mental health cases, and counseling could be the right answer. Research shows that one in every five people and over fifty-one million people suffer from mental health illness in the US (Shi et al, 2020).
