When my grandparents died, we witnessed conflicts that cost the resources in settling the disputes, both of inheritance and the suits on previously grabbed pieces of land. The cases were created due to the dilemma of the inheritance among my three uncles and my father. My grandfather was blessed with five children from two wives. Dalian, peter, and Garland are part of the family from my grandmother, Ann Ferguson, who was the first wife to my grandpa, Mathew Ferguson. On the other hand, my father Samuel and Christine were born from Lenah Ferguson, my immediate grandmother. There were no conflicts between my grandmothers as co-wives, as narrated to me by my father, but my uncles were treating each other with the animosity of rivals. At the age where polygamy was a sign of wealth, my grandfather amassed a lot of wealth to sustain his prestigious name that was known far and wide. He was among the respectable elders in the neighborhood. As such, he used the opportunity to acquire wealth that included vast pieces of land at the countrysides and the plots at the Carolina and Los Angeles.
Patriarchal and masculinity in my grandfather are praised by my father and the neighbors who came in touch with him. I have been a keen listener of the story, given the constant reminder that I look like him. My father told me that my mental acuity and stubbornness on issue originates from my uncle, while some friends and my teachers in school had been saying I resembled him. Therefore, I took a keen interest to learn the story and events that led to the prominence of my grandfather. I liked being referred to as Thomas Ferguson for that reason. It was prestigious and brought some sense of belonging to be associated with the name. It was held with esteem, particularly in school, given that the piece of land that the school is established by my grandfather. The perception that the people had about our lineage and the family was affirmative. However, the reality about us was not short of drama.
There was sibling rivalry between my uncles. The firstborn son, Peter, was whispered that he was born out of wedlock hence the treatment given to him made him reluctant and withdrawn from the affairs of the family, particularly the wealth of my grandfather. Dalian, who acted as the "firstborn," had severally tease Peter as a bastard and illegitimate son. A story is told when they still young that they fought fiercely that Peter got injured due to a gang fight among the brothers. The perceived and real conflict among them continued till late, when they were grown to decipher the realities. Peter did not blame the brothers for the unbecoming behavior but rather sided with his mother, and the conflict deepened hence making my grandfather stay in my grandmother's place, where he was peaceful.
My grandfather manager to acquire wealth both legally and through dubious means. He was a well-connected and networked person who could get everything he wanted and used the influence to threatened people with the sole purpose of amassing wealth and properties. In that connection, he had invested in the agriculture and real estate business in Los Angeles and Carolina. At the time of his death, my grandfather was worth over $100 000 million dollars invested in land and rental apartments. There was an arrangement to alienate the sons who were not loyal to him, those who sympathizers of Peter and the first wife. One son, in particular, Dalian, was not fair and just and taken advantage of the situation to influence the old man to write a will in his favor. At the last moments, he was with him in his hospital bed to, and hence he becomes the apple of my grandfather's eye. He was mandated to be a director of the company that manages the wealth of the Fergusons.
The discrepancies in the will that was presented during the burial of my grandparent created a legal battle that was pioneered by my father was more informed than the rest of his brothers. The property was shared in that Dalian was given half of the riches, and the rest was shared equally among the remaining brothers (Hashim et al., 2017). Furthermore, pieces of jewelry and valuables were handed to Dalian based on his affiliation with their father. Although the mutual relationship between him and the father was known and visible to the members of the father, there was a word that Dalian used malicious and dubious means to win the trust of his father. The reality made other members support my father in his quest to reclaim their rightful share of the property and get connected to their father. Dalian would have been unfairly wealthier in relation to his brothers.
Psychological Explanation of the Experiences
I had not realized that when a loss of a parent occurs, the children react and deal with the grief differently based on the connection they had with the parent. The situation is based on the experiences and the emotional intelligence of the bereaved. Inheritance and will be written by my grandfather was biased, and it made the entire process of mourning and loss long and unbearable. The mischief of Dalian wanting to control the family belongings, family homes, and finances, and land attract the conclusion that he was greedy and materialistic (Hawkes, 2020). However, I learned with the insightful and psychological understanding that it was more than material things.
Dalian wanted to be linked with his father all along, and the inheritance of his jewelry and wealth was an attempt to remain connected and relevant in the eyes of his loving father even after his demise. For instance, my grandfather's old reading glasses and his walking stick were kept by Dalian (Lewis et al. 2017). In essence, each inheritance serves to remind ad to connect us to the past, how our parents loved us, and what they meant to us. In addition, how parents decide who inherits what is a clear display of what we meant to them.
The behavior of Dalian and my grandfather can be understood through the Hamilton rule, while the will dispute is understood by analyzing the hunting hypothesis. According to the tenets of Hamilton's rule, genes are transferred to future offspring like the children and grandchildren through parenting directly or indirectly through aiding the reproduction of immediate relatives like the nephews and nieces (Hawkes, 2020). The principle under this parenting is called altruistic instinct. The closeness is based on the l0ove that the parent that parent has for his generation. In the case of our family, our grandfather was keen on promoting his genes by providing a conducive environment for them. Therefore, discrimination against peter is justified through the principle of inclusive fitness. The people who share the same genes cooperate and protect each other hence enabling the transfer of the same genes (van Veelen et al. 2016). The closeness of his my grandfather's biological sons is psychologically justified through keen selection.
