Developmental Psychology: The Terrible Twos
The terrible twos describe a crucial age in children’s lives where they start understanding how to control themselves. It is a difficult age around two years where children are constantly opposed to everything and thus necessitates parents to assert control over their children. Imperatively, parents begin shaping their children and their behaviors during this period when they are expected to be rebellious. It is a crucial time since it endorses the sociability of children. Notably, this timeframe shows that kids possess some kind of social reflexivity (Gallacher, 2005). Toddlers passively internalize adult discipline thereby underlining the importance of shaping children’s behaviors and acting as a role model during this vital phase of their lives. The terrible twos merely describe a time when a child develops independence and learns how to express expression and thus not acts of defiance directed to the parent.
Biological Changes at the Age of Two
Children at the age of two possess numerous biological changes as they begin to be more confident about their physical changes. Notably, this period underlines a phase where children whether shy and careful or confident and careless, will test their limits. Their bodies start to develop and thus they can walk and talk. Children at this stage love to run, ride on toys, swing, and climb among other physical activities due to the development of their bodies. Notably, they are more vocal as their language develop quickly during this stage. Children at this stage may still fail to comprehensively communicate but the more their words make sense the more they will be willing to communicate. By the age of two, a lot of children will be able to name a lot of things that they constantly come across or interact with while they will also be able to respond to some instructions.
Conversely, children encounter other biological changes during this age such as growth in birthweight and an increase in height. These changes also entail a change in the head size as the child is developing. Two-year-olds develop emotionally as they can swiftly switch from being happy and friendly to being sullen and weepy. Therefore, biologically, the children struggle with the numerous changes transpiring in their bodies while they aim to assert their control to the newly developed freedom and growth.
