Effect of Caffeine on cognitive functions
Caffeine is among the most consumed psycho stimulant worldwide. It is usually present in coffee, beverages, food, and drugs. As a stimulant, caffeine can have both negative and positive effects on cognitive functions. Even though caffeine has adverse effects such as disrupted sleep patterns and anxiety, it may increase alertness and brain function, decrease the risk of Alzheimer's disease, cut down depression rates, and boost long-term memory.
Caffeine increases mental alertness of a person. When individuals are fatigued or rested, consuming moderate doses of caffeine would greatly help in improving their level of concentration, vigilance and reaction time. According to a test conducted by Cappelletti, Daria, Sani, & Aromatario (2015), a dose of 300 mg approximately improves the daytime concentration both rested individuals and the partially sleep-deprived significantly as seen from the sleep latency test. As a result, this increases one’s level of attention.
Individuals who take caffeine experience an increase in brain function and develop overall good brain health. The caffeine found in coffee contains polyphenol antioxidants that affect the adenosine receptors located in the brain. The effect of polyphenol antioxidants makes the people above the age of 70 have better on mental functions. The caffeine enhances thinking skills and slows down mental decline. Therefore, caffeine consumers have better-thinking ability and memory performance than the non-consumers.
