The Uniqueness of Humans
If someone asked you what distinguishes humans from animals, one of the common answers that would probably come to mind is language. According to Anderson (2004), Language is a medium of communication which consists of words in a structured and conventional way that allows humans to express their ideas and emotions. Chomsky (1972), states that language is one attribute that is unique to humans among all other living beings. However, one can observe that all animals can also communicate. The human language has numerous structures which allows them to control its use in several ways which depends upon the definitive structure in the use of the flow of words in sentences when communicating. These are traits that are distinctive, sophisticated and intricate for animals since they use a non-systematic approach in communicating. The goal of this paper is to elucidate the distinguishing features of human from animals within an evolutionary perspective and to specifically prove that human language can create complex language and reasoning which is out of reach for other species.
Humans have a complex neurology and evolution. Fromkin et al. (2003) believe that language has emerged from the evolution of mankind which resulted in the progress of the speech production. Gould (1994), as recognized by Fromkin et al. (2003), presumed that the human brain enlarges its size which allows the processing of numerous things. Hauser et al. (2002) further discussed the advantages of human having large brains. The impressive speech production done by humans is believed to be caused by the neural advancement. According to them, humans have primordial brain regions such as the subcortical region, brain stem, and the cerebral cortex which enable humans to categorize, think in abstract and form images. The cerebral cortex gives the humans the ability to undergo mental activities such as thinking and reasoning.
