The Influence of the Social Environment on Juvenile Delinquent Behaviors (Essay Sample)
The social environment is an important research aspect in psychology due to its influence on human behavior development. Psychologists focus on how upbringing (nurture) impacts a person's behavior development and, ultimately, life outcomes. The social environment creates the conditions for individuals to learn and develop specific behaviors. For example, a child brought up by drinking parents is likely to become a substance user in later life. This outcome demonstrates the social environment’s influence on behavior development.

Introduction
Basic research refers to a study design meant to improve scientific knowledge on a given issue. Basic research is theoretical and curiosity-driven as it focuses on explaining concepts and the relationship between different variables without attempting to provide solutions to practical problems (University of Texas at El Paso, 2021). For instance, basic research may investigate the prevalence of substance abuse among African American adolescents without exploring viable interventions to prevent the problem. In contrast, applied research focuses on answering specific questions or finding solutions to identified problems (University of Texas at El Paso, 2021). As the name suggests, applied research is experimental because it investigates the usefulness of a given tool/intervention in solving a problem. For instance, the researcher may be interested in exploring the efficacy of school-based sex education on reducing pregnancy prevalence rates in sexually active adolescents. In this regard, while basic research increases knowledge on a given issue, applied research seeks answers to those issues.
