Performance Appraisals should Not be Eliminated
A performance appraisal, also known as a review, is an assessment of a worker's accomplishments and efforts to an institution over a specified time. It considers the person's growth, achievements, and abilities. Organizations can track employee performance to decide on dismissal or bonuses. Depending on the institution, performance appraisals can be conducted annually, quarterly, or semi-annually. Performance reviews can assist organizations in determining how well workers perform their work responsibilities and where they can improve to better align with the organization's overall mission (Lotich, 2018). Holding regular job evaluations makes it possible for an open discussion of work objectives and expectations. Therefore, this paper focuses on why I disagree with some management experts' suggestions that performance reviews be eliminated from the work setting.
Some management experts have various reasons behind their opinion of eliminating performance reviews from the work setting. Some experts claim that performance appraisals are time-consuming, which is why they should be eliminated. I would assert that failing to conduct performance reviews is a waste of more than just time. The length of time it takes to undertake performance reviews varies. I believe that doing performance reviews is an investment, regardless of how long it takes since poor performance within an institution can impact the institution as a whole and have adverse implications, a few of which may cost the organization resources, precious time, and possibly money.
Moreover, another reason why the opinion of the management expert of eliminating performance appraisal should not be considered is that performance reviews are meant to assist the organization in assessing how their workers are performing their assigned roles, and thus it does not alienate workers. I do not see how performance reviews can alienate workers. I honestly believe that the workers' performance has caused them to become estranged from their fellow employees. I believe this is true since few individuals desire to be around persons who do not give their best effort. Thus, the opinion of some management experts that performance appraisal should be eliminated because it alienates workers is not satisfactory. Performance appraisals would bring workers together since those who have been ranked average will want to associate with the best performers to learn how to perform better at work (Employee Performance Reviews: Why You Should Keep & Fix Them, 2016).
