Friendship is defined as a state of having the affection that has resulted from the goodwill and mutual esteem. Friendship is viewed as a combination of respect, loyalty, love, trust, and affection. Further, friendship demonstrates attachment to one another and the ability to remain unconditional and survive the test of time. Friendship provides emotional safety in a way that individuals are not forced to measure their words or weigh their thoughts. It is long lasting since it goes way beyond just having to share time with the people who are dear to you. Friendship is not one-sided, and two individuals are involved in the negotiation of the boundaries thus making it impossible for one individual to sustain a friendship (Weiner, 2003).
Friendship to others is the trust that someone will not hurt you. However, there are various things that draw people together as friends. Having common interests is one of the factors that draw people to a friendship. Common interests tend to tie people closer to their friends. The other factor that contributes to friendship is having the same history or having gone through same experiences in life. Common values may also draw people together as friends. Equality in the relating parties and dependence on one another can lead to true friendship.
