The drugs are becoming more and more prevalent in today’s world. The use of drugs has been a real problem in many regions of the world. The continuous use of the drugs affects an individual by causing suffering and pain and also causes suffering to the society where such an individual is coming from. Despite the continued efforts that have been put across to eradicate the use of mood-altering substances, there is no sign that people will end the use of these substances (Aue, 2006). Thus, it has been a complex problem in the society since there are many reasons why people fall under such substances. It is thus important to understand these reasons in order for the society to deal with the problem effectively.
Individuals who are suffering from bipolar disorder, anxiety, and depression or even mental illness tend to use mood altering substances.
When some people are suffering from mental illness diseases, they tend to see them as a burden and thus will try as much as they can to relieve such a burden. In such cases the individuals suffering will use the mood-altering substances to relieve the pain that they are facing. Individuals suffering from such disorders think that mood altering substances such as alcohol, marijuana, cocaine and other drugs relieve such pain as they have the ability to temporarily make the person "normal". Because people suffering from mental disorders are afraid of visiting a doctor to seek advice, such a person instead turn to drugs and alcohol as they try to solve the problem. However, the disease that such a person is suffering from will not be relieved after using the drugs but instead, they are postponing the problems.
