Christ as the Physician of the Body and Soul
Christ’s Messianic mission on earth is seen through His merciful deeds of healing. Throughout the Gospel books in the New Testament and as prophesied in the Old Testament scriptures, Christ offers healing to those bound by sickness not only physically but also emotionally and spiritually. Contrasted to today’s knowledge of what a physician does, Christ’s acts of healing are similar in the following metaphorical ways:
First, just like a physician is knowledgeable on the nature of a disease, its causes and symptoms and what to do to cure or prevent it, Christ too showed great know-how on the maladies of the soul and body through the very nature of sin. According to John 6:63, Christ teaches that The Spirit of the Lord is life and not the body. This shows that Christ knew the nature and goodness of spiritual healing and medicines just like a physician would study all types of ailments. In His teachings, Christ reveals that the authority given to Him was from above (John5:34-36) the same way a physician must have a license of practice from an authority. A disease is curable only if the doctor or physician knows its nature in great depth. The same way, Christ knows what’s plaguing someone from the inside, the sins done in secret and the hidden thoughts.
In other different ways, a physician cannot raise his dead patient to life but Christ did. A physician is subject to the diseases they treat depending on their nature but Christ was not created like we are- He knew no sin (2 Corinthians 5:21). Earthly physicians...
