Abstract
Abortion has been a subject of concern drawing many arguments and debates worldwide. Abortion is procured mostly by wayward young generation who in most cases are not ready for the pregnancy. The subjects that raise emotions is the fact that abortion sparks the question at what stage does life begin. Those condemning abortion they view it as murder whereas as those supporting it assume that because the fetus cannot take part in any contract like other already born human beings, the fetus cannot be treated as a human thus abortion is not murder. The anti-abortion also brings up the fact of personal privacy where an individual has a right of privacy. The argument is that a woman has a right to do what she pleases with her body without interference from other parties. When this issue is observed from a religious point of view, the act is seemed to be murder according to the fifth commandment which states we shall not kill. The research in this paper will examine abortion critically.
Abortion is a medical procedure used to deliberately terminate human pregnancy and cause death of the fetus. In medical terms abortion refers to the loss of the fetus before it is mature enough to survive outside the womb. The constitution of USA forbids abortion and only allows it when the life of the mother is in danger as a result of the pregnancy other complications related to the pregnancy(Keogh et al, 2015). Religion forbids human beings from taking away life from a person; this directive is found in the Ten Commandments and thus making abortion practice unethical. In many instances abortion is done behind the doors because it is forbidden by the low, and a large proportion of these cases end up with casualties and it is then that the public get awareness of the act. The procedure followed during abortion depends on the duration of the pregnancy I terms of weeks or months. There are two types of abortion namely: medical abortion and surgical abortion. Medical abortion is also known as abortion with pills (Hajri, Raifman, Gerdts, Baum&Foster, 2015). In this type the woman is given a pill which she swallows and the pill known as mifepristone induces heavy bleeding in the womb.the result of this heavy bleeding is termination of the pregnancy. This method works when the pill is taken before twelve weeks after missing the monthly period. After taking the pill there is always medical follow up in less than a week to confirm if the abortion was successful and to be sure it is complete.
The second method which is surgical abortion, isalso known as aspiration abortion. This procedure involves the use of medical equipment’s. Theequipment’s are inserted inside the vagina; they are pushed further into the uterus where they are used to remove the pregnancy(Hajri et al, 2015).. These methods for pregnancies not older than twelve weeks from the time one misses her monthly period. In the above mentioned two methods one should expect very strong cramps and adnominal pain during the period of abortion.it is reported in some cases the pain is too much resulting to the patient being unconscious. The pain is also accompanied by light or heavy bleeding depending on where the abortion was procured. The bleeding can last up to a week or two weeks and in some cases the patient might bleed to death especially if the procedure was not above board.in the United States of America surgical abortion costs between three hundred and one thousand dollars whereas medical abortion costs between three hundred and 800 dollars (Keogh et al, 2015). The two abortion procedures seldom fail and have a success rating of ninety eight to ninety nine percent. These two procedures of abortion have no effect on fertility of the patient and one can get comfortably pregnant in future. The above methods have been practiced safely since the year 1980 in Europe and from the year 2000 in United States. Medical abortion is more preferred because it is less risky and results few health complications. Medical abortion has its own advantages and disadvantages. This abortion requires no anesthesia and medical equipment’s are not used. And it can be done at home or at the hospital thus it’s more convenient and consumes less time. On the other hand, it has two disadvantages which are: it requires two days for its completion and cannot be done when the pregnancy is past three months.
Aspiration method takes a short while just like medical abortion. The bleeding is also less when compared to medical abortion and can do at a more advanced level of pregnancy unlike medical abortion. Thus have more advantages than the pill abortion procedure. Om the other hand it is more invasive that is: medical equipment’s are inserted in the vagina and uterus thus more painful. It involves the use of anesthetics which in many cases results into side effects. The vacuum aspirator used makes a lot of noise; the procedure is more technical thus making it less convenient as compared to medical abortion. Many states in the US require parental consent for anyone less than 18yrs to get an abortion(Keogh et al, 2015). Exceptions are allowed in cases of medical emergency, assault, rape cases and incest.Abortion process involves killing the fetus and thus becomes an ethical issue in the context.in the aspect where it is done to save the life of the mother, it is in one point of view ethical but on the other point of view unethical because it involves killing one life which is bad, and saving another life which is a good aspect. According to religion, mankind is delegated to preserve life. McFarlane, 2015 cited ethics as the study and analysis of values and decision of what is right or wrong. Abortion has been the subject of philosophical debate in many years. Abortion has raised many ethical questions which on one hand support abortion and on the other hand condemn abortion.
Majority of people are in the view that abortion is wrong as they believe life begins at that embryo stage of development and thus abortion is murder. Abortion kills the fetus which has no mistake and thus is killed as aresult of recklessness of those who engaged in the sexual act not being prepared of the end results. For example teenagers who engage in unprotected sex and are not of the age of becoming parents. Anti-abortion campaigners on the other side of the debate argue that the other have rights over the pregnancy thus should be allowed to terminate pregnancy at will....
