A prayer is a humble request for assistance or a way by which people thank their Almighty creator or objects of worship. It also serves as a tool of interaction between people and their objects of worship. Prayers in school is a controversial issue and many institutions have been in a dilemma whether to allow or ban prayer in public schools. Unfortunately some institutions have completely eradicated the idea of having prayers in their institution due to religious conflicts that might ensue among different religious groups.
The society is made up of different religions and the constitution guarantees the citizens the freedom and rights of worship and religion. The constitution justifies and glorifies the existence of prayer and worship among different people in the society. The essay seeks to underscore the benefits and demerits of tolerating prayers in public schools. I strongly agree with the idea of having freedom of religion and worship being embodied in the states constitution. Additionally, the essay aims to justify my stand as to why religion should not be allowed to discriminate individuals in public institutions.
I strongly oppose the idea of incorporating religion in public school because it can breed enmity among different religions groups. For instance I would be very offensive to forcefully make a Muslim student to recite Bible verses and prayers. However, the schools should accommodate different religions so as to end the stalemate of whether or not to have religious prayers in public schools. There should be no compulsory prayers in public as it violates and infringes on the rights and freedom of worship.
I strongly feel about this topic as it bred a series of oppositions, quarrels and fights in various public schools. Those students who do not subscribe to a particular faith have been subjected to both mental and psychological torture. For instance, schools that restricts female students from wearing hijabs have made them feel as if they are lesser beings in the society. The discrimination is so horrible and oppressive.
It is not also fair and just to have prayer public schools. The reason being those advocating for the inclusion of prayer and religion in schools are always biased to other religion. The parties don’t give room for other religious parties to free express their thoughts on various subjects that affects the society. It would also be a terrible burden on the side of schools to teach and monitor various religious groups in the schools.
The idea of embracing prayers in public schools is invasive and coercive. The school should bow to the religious privacy and differences of various student groups. According to (Gaylor, 2011). The schools should avoid taking positions when it comes to religion. It is advisable that the schools shun away stringent religious observance and coercion (Gaylor, 2011). Moreover, the schools should learn to accommodate the different diversity so as to harmoniously run its public affairs.
