Reasons Why "I Think, Therefore I Am" By René Descartes Is True
René Descartes was a French mathematician, philosopher, and an author. He is referred to as the Father and originator of modern philosophy. Much of successive Western philosophy is a reaction to his work. "I think. Therefore I am", which can be translated to, I am thinking, therefore I exist is a philosophical suggestion by René Descartes (Dicker, 2013). The meaning is that considering one’s being attests to, and of itself, that one thinks and so exists. Descartes explains that people cannot question their existence. Descartes is trying to determine whether he could confirm that he lives. This paper discusses the reasons why it is true, according to Descartes that because human beings think, they exist, and goes on to give various reasons to support the fact.
Someone can use all mechanisms and tools to prove that some things do not exist, but finally, they have to prove their existence. Detlefsen (2013) points that Descartes has challenged all things that he believed to be true. When there is nothing remaining, he is left to himself. Irrespective of whether or not he is misled by devil or his beliefs are incorrect, he is poised to tell that even though he possesses the capability to question things, he must be living, to even question in the first place (Detlefsen, 2013). The fact that Descartes can think guarantees himself of his existence. Just like Descartes, it is imperative that as one carries on with their quest for reality whether they exist or not, the truth is, given the fact that they can think, they exist.
The principle of thinking and existing does not just emanate from the physical nature but an eternal force or being (Dicker, 2013). It is impossible to perfect by oneself. It is impractical to one to exist without having the ability to think. In addition, it is impossible to think without the influence of an eternal endowment. Descartes (2012) acknowledges that something must come from somewhere and that he could not derive any wisdom by himself. He goes on to conclude that it was instilled in him by nature that is perfect than him. The nature that Descartes alludes to is God, which possess all the perfections. Since human beings can think; that they did not create, there must be another being that exists. God exists and instills in human beings the power to think. Since people think, they too exist, just like the Supreme Being (Descartes, 2012).
People’s opinions and deductions are not always true until one proves it by themselves. In Detlefsen, (2013), Descartes does not dismiss the fact that sometimes it is necessary to follow and accept the views and inferences that individuals make, even though they may be ambiguous.
