John the Apostle of Love Student's name Institution Affiliation When you go through the story of the disciples of Jesus, each and every disciple is being associated to a given attribute that he played most of the time in his service as a disciple of Jesus Christ. Among this disciples was John who from the way events unfolded was one who was dramatically changed by our Lord Jesus. Among all the disciples, John was the youngest. Many of the scholars have always felt that he was a teenager of between 17 to 18 years. He joined discipleship along with his brother James. He was a hot-headed man due to his utterances that were sharp and impulsive. He always could blow-off steam whenever he felt like doing so. The nickname by Jesus as a Son of Thunder, can be associated to the likelihood of having a loudmouth. That could be the best way of our Lord to label the problem of John. John most of the time kept the thunder rolling something that resulted to both James and him being nicknamed Sons of Thunder. However, regardless of the above trait, John has been regarded as the apostle of love. AL through his graciousness, goodness, and gentleness have been noted. This was one of the virtues that our Lord had emphasized a lot in and He even declared love to be the greatest law for human beings. This was because love cuts across all the required principles for human beings to exist without any problem. Until his end, we never saw John marrying and for this reason he is being referred to as "The Virgin" since no record has been put down to even indicate the act of marriage. However, he was called ‘virgin' due to the purity that he had in his life. He turned out to be very outstanding in his devotion in his service as Jesus's disciple and also his love for our Lord Jesus that he was named as the apostle of love. In most of the books that John wrote, we see him touching on the love our Lord to us as human beings and also, the importance of love to us (Fee & Douglas, 2014). In the book of John 3:16, he tries to express on how our God loved the world. This show how John loves our Lord, that he tries to expose it to all humanity, on the extent of his love to the whole world. This was in the book of John. Looking into the first letter of John, there so many incidents that we have seen him talking of the commandment of love. In 1 John 2:15, John is warning humanity against loving the world and what it gives them and he goes ahead to warn them that if any man goes ahead to love the world more than God then there is no love from him/her to the Father. This is an indication on how serious John is about his love to God. He feels that nothing that should come in between the love of humans and that of their Father (Stott, 1988). In the book of 1 John 3:11-18, John is trying to teach how human beings should love each other. He is giving an example of Cain and Abel and how lack of love between the brothers led to Cain killing Abel. He goes ahead to express that loving a brother should be in actions and not in words (Jerold, 2001). He cautions us that if we cannot love our brothers then it means that it will be difficult for us to love our heavenly Father. Then he concludes by telling us that our love should resemble that of children for us to ensure that we love each other. Here John is trying to show how serious love can be if we have it or lack it. This shows the concern that John has for human beings and he even dedicates his time to teach them on how to have real love in them for peaceful existence. In this context, John is showing us how the path of love should be to ensure success in it (Stott, 1988). In chapter 4:7-12, we see John insisting on the reason of us loving one another. He says that love belongs to God and we should do according to His ways. In this context, he is trying to show us on how we can make our love visible to our brothers and sisters. The love of God has been made visible through sending his only son to die for our sins. He paid the price that we could have paid ourselves. Then he goes ahead to insist that if human beings cannot love each other then it will be difficult...
