In America, there is a more desired lifestyle that most people aspire to live. Great attention is centered on the homeownership and upper mobility aspects of what people call "American Dream." Many individuals in America believe that this lifestyle is attainable, through hard work and determination (Bloom & Hobby, 2009). From my point of view, over the years, the insight of the American dream has reformed considerably. Today, the American dream involves the set of expectations that focus on making money and owning property (Rowland & Jones, 2011). This paper is about the changing perception of the American dream. It will also present the past and present events that affected a substantial change in housing in the American Dream.
Some aspects in American dream such as personal independence, finding happiness, home ownership, fulfilling one’s potential and freedom of movement has not changed, but remains the same in the past and the present (Youngberg, 2009). Change in American dream has created a group of people in America who do not obey the rule of law, but instead they do anything they feel it is right in order to realize their personal goals (Rowland & Jones, 2011).
On the issue of housing in the American Dream, it is true that people has changed their perception on the issue of homeownership (Obama, 2006). In the past, people in America always dreamt of owning a home, despite what it would take. They considered a home to be the most treasured asset in their life. This led people to go for mortgages and loans in order to buy home (dream home) in their preferred places. Today, although owning a home remain one of the greatest dreams of many people in America, other factors such as a financial crisis, has led people to change their perception on home ownership (Bloom & Hobby, 2009). Nowadays, people prefer saving their earning, buy what they can afford and live debt-free life. Unlike in the past, some p...
