The Challenges of Edmund O'Gorman and Sor Juana Inés De La Cruz
Edmund O'Gorman developed various arguments challenging Columbus' myth that he had discovered America. Edmund O'Gorman argued from a philosophical view that Columbus was unaware of having landed on a new continent. Early biographies indicated that Columbus did not know of the discovery, and he had no prior plans to visit and discover America. Edmund O'Gorman considered Columbus as someone who accidentally stumbled on a new object and wanted to take credit for discovering the new object. However, he did not have extensive knowledge of what he had discovered (Nuccetelli, 2020). In addition, Edmund argues that a discoverer must have had the background information on what they were looking for in their endeavor. Columbus had no defined identity of America, and he stumbled into the continent by chance. In some instances, Columbus referred to Americans as Indians, indicating a lack of knowledge about the discovery.
