Using Force on Juveniles
Various factors determine the extent a law enforcement officer can use force. Of great significance is that a police officer needs to utilize the Use of Force Model when dealing with potential criminals. According to this model, when a criminal is compliant and proves to be cooperative, a law enforcement officer is only required to use practical communication skills to talk the individual out of trouble. Contact controls are to be utilized when there is passive resistance unless the said persons begin to actively resist. At this juncture, compliance techniques can be utilized. However, when an individual becomes assaultive and aggressive that he or she can cause potential harm, the officer can use defensive tactics or deadly force depending on how the level of threat (Bright Enlightenment, 2014). Even though this model is largely accepted, the situation on the ground can be confusing, and a compliant criminal can suddenly become violent. The situation is even challenging, especially when dealing with juvenile offenders. Even though using force is often discouraged, an officer might find the need to use it depending on the threat level.
