Culture is the way of life of a group of individuals. It is that complex whole that consists of laws, morals, beliefs, collective behaviors, and norms that guide man in his daily interactions with others in the society. In each and every society, there exists laws that dictate how the young are supposed to relate with theirs elders. In all societies, culture encourages respect to the elderly by the young. This respect can be expressed in the form of language through words such as Mr. or Sir. The ad agency chose this power relation for its commercial to show that whenever one shall be using their services, they shall always portray the virtues of respect. I completely relate to this kind of power relation and have had similar experience in life both in High School and College.
When I joined High School, St. Junior High, I got introduced into the culture of referring to the teachers and School workers as Sir, Mr. or Mrs. By referring to them in this particular manner, it showed subordination. All the students did this and through all my years in St. Junior High, there are only a few teachers and school workers of whom I knew their official first names. However, even if students knew their names, they preferred to use Sir, Mr. or Mrs. when relating with them as it portrays subordination and with this the response would always be positive...
