Diagnostic Reflection Essay
Albert Einstein is a scientist that made remarkable contributions to our understanding of relativity. His theories are considered amongst the greatest contributions in science. Einstein was unable to speak until he was four years old, and it wasn’t until he was seven that he learned to read. One of his tutors told him that he would never amount to anything. With his slow development, one could never imagine he would become one of the most influential scientists. After reading on Einstein, I began to understand why he said: “Everybody is a genius, but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing its stupid.”
My understanding of this quote is that everybody is a genius and it all depends on what is used to measure it. The challenge is figuring out your “inner genius.” Most people struggle to copy someone else’s genius not knowing that every person is unique. Many paths lead to one destination. Comparing oneself to someone else’s abilities may make you feel inadequate and lose focus on your strengths. I feel as though Einstein is urging us to embrace of fishiness. The quote motivates me to search for my inner genius which involves seeking my passions and uniqueness. Many other lessons can be derived from Alberts quote. Like me, most people are not aware of their gifts since they come easily to them. This is how I interpret Einstein’s quote.
After realizing this, I began to examine my unconscious and conscious beliefs regarding my intelligence. I realized that most of the beliefs I had of myself were shaped by my past experiences and influences from others. My opinion on my gifts was inaccurate not only did other not believe in me; I did not believe in my abilities. I wanted to be good at things people such as my parents and friends expected me to be good at, not the things I wanted for myself. With this knowledge, I began making the right changes. Every time I feel inadequate I reminded myself of my uniqueness.
Since childhood, I have always applied this quote to my life without knowing. I always avoided all the things I knew I wasn’t naturally good. Instead, I focused on the things I flourished at. As much as I was good at many things, there were things I could do better than everyone else. I did not notice back then since some of these things came naturally to me. It was not until I was placed against an opponent that I saw glimpses of my potential. I wasn’t top of my class neither did I get any of the girls I liked but boy was I good at sports. I won sportsman of the year back to back. Even before the winner was announced, everyone expected me year after year. However, my performance in school was not great. My grades were average and I hardly ever ...
