Same-sex marriage is among the topics that are highly debated in the contemporary world, and it has attracted diverse reactions from both those advocating and those opposing it. Those against same-sex marriage maintain that it will weaken the institution of marriage and that marriage should only happen between a man and woman. On the other hand, proponents of same-sex marriage contend that any two consenting adults should be allowed to be in a relationship irrespective of their sexes, and have the right to receive the financial, social, and emotional benefits associated with marriage (Sullivan, 2004). This paper seeks to argue that same-sex marriage should not be legalized.
To start with, if same-sex marriage is legalized, the human population will definitely dwindle. Couples of same-sex marriages cannot reproduce naturally, and the only options they have is to either adopt or use artificial insemination. Although artificial insemination can enable these couples to procreate, hence increasing the human population, the process is quite expensive, and consequently, many of the same-sex couples cannot afford the services. Furthermore, children brought up by same-sex parents do not receive the required affection as it is the case with the heterosexual marriages. During the birth process, hormones like oxytocin are released to enable the creation of a perfect bond between the mother and the newborn. Thus, allowing same-sex marriage will lower the quality of childhood life because children will not be able to naturally bond with their parents (Corvino & Gallagher, 2012).
Delving further into this divisive issue, it is evident that as children develop, they need to have a balance in both male and female role models. Although same-sex couples may endeavor to play all the roles played by a father and mother in heterosexual marriage while nurturing a child, a man cannot perfectly play the roles played by a woman because of his physical as well as psychological make-up. Similarly, a woman cannot be fully a man. Consequently, same-sex couples cannot accomplish parental roles in wholesome, and this can affect the quality of parental care a child receives (Chamie & Mirkin, January 01, 2011).
Proponents of same-sex marriages usually assert that it is immoral to deny a person the right to marry the person of their choice, and as result, they should be allowed to proclaim their love and commitment to the people they adore as it is the case with heterosexual marriages (Spilsbury, 2012). However, such claims are not strong enough to make same-sex marriages legal. Allowing same-sex marriage will threaten the sanctity of heterosexual marriage, and, as a result, lead to more divorce cases, affecting the existence of the human beings (Liberty.edu, 2015). In addition, same-sex marriages violate the old traditional values and religious beliefs about marriage. Traditionally, people married to support procreation an aspect that is not upheld by same-sex couples. Similarly, many religions believe that God created man and woman, and, as a result, same-sex marriages go against the natural law (Staver, 2004).
