Drug abuse is a problem all around the globe. Countless people continue to lose their lives but it seems as if the society is unperturbed. Friends and families are even fighting against each other for control of drug empires. Governments worldwide seem powerless in the war. This essay discusses how drugs are tools of social war.
The society gives the impression that the war on drug abuse is for those personally affected. Millions of people, especially the youth, are admitted in rehabilitation centers (Osorio, 2015). The society continues to lose talented people given that drugs make addicts lose their personality and are, therefore, easily manipulated. They become solely dependent on drugs shutting down other things in their lives completely. The drug lords win the war on social power without lifting a single finger (Vance, 2012). Drug dealers take advantage of this and make fortunes out of the desperation of the drug users.
Drug cartels have become so big and powerful. Countries such as El Salvador, Afghanistan and Mexico are characterized by powerful cartels (Hanson, Venturelli & Fleckenstein, 2011). The cartels are extremely powerful that they at times take full control of entire cities and towns. 90 percent of the world’s opium comes from Afghanistan and it is believed that this is because the Afghan government is complicit (Osorio, 2015). The cartels use all kinds of tactics to thrive. In a Mexico for instance, a drug lord killed his brother and his entire family just to take control of a cartel (Osorio, 2015).
