Introduction and Background to the Study
Fishing is the act of catching fish in a variety of ways. Commercial fishing is taking fish for sale. Recreational fishing is catching fish for personal use or for the sport of catching fish. Recreational caught fish are eaten by the person catching them or released, they are not sold. Recreational fishing can be done in a variety of ways. Most consider fishing to be taking fish by hook and line. You can use either poles, rod or reel to do so.
Fishing in Kenya
The Kenya’s fisheries sector plays an important role in the national economy. As an economic activity earning people a living, the industry is very important to fishing communities, fish traders, fish processors and fish farmers. The sector supports 80,000 people directly and about 800,000 others indirectly (National Economic Survey, 2006). In this regard, it is expected that the people involved in this economic activity should have their living standards elevated progressively and proportionately. However, the economic reality on the fishermen on Lake Victoria poses a contradicting reality on this concept. Having better living standards should be reflective in the access to the basic needs such as education, food, shelter and health. This should be the case of the people who are engaged in any kind of economic activity.
Statement of the Problem
Fishing as an economic activity, is not only important in promoting trade, but also as an economic activity that is meant to improve the living standards of fishermen and make those fishing and in any other way involved in the activity realize their desired goals. In the last studies made earlier, fishermen are ranked as the poorest people along the fishing areas in Kisumu County.
This study seeks to fill the existing research gap by conducting study to assess the effectiveness of fishing in improving the economic standards of the fishermen in fishing areas along Lake Victoria.
General objective
The general objective of this study is to assess the effectiveness of fishing in improving the economic standards of the fishermen along Lake Victoria.
Specific Objectives
This study was guided by the following specific objectives:
1 To establish the effectiveness of fishing in fishing areas.
2 To determine the extent to which fishermen benefit from the activity.
3 To assess the role of government and other involved institutions in making fishing essential and reliable.
4 To find out how fishermen carryout the activity to make it beneficial.
