Effects of physical and health impairments on normal motor development
There are different types of physical and health impairments which ultimately cause impairments and substantially limit an individual’s capacity to take participation in various life activities either in school, home or at work (Stensel & Morris, 2003). Both physical and health impairment refer to specific kinds of health problems which constantly seek for and dictate the concern for special educational and medical services
(Francis & Nalan, 2006).
Both functional and physiological defects in any given population are diverse and indeed complex. They pose a variety of challenges to the affected individuals especially in the achievement of normal motor capabilities and milestones (Stephen & Grace, 1993). Children experiencing these kinds of defects may have challenges in attaining the general physical motor milestones such as walking, crawling, jumping, skipping, running, sitting and the like. Such defects can hamper a Childs mobility, stamina coordination learning and communication to extreme points such that educational goals and objectives are hard to be achieved (Kauffman, 1999).
Such kinds of health impairments include conditions such as asthma, hemophilia, rheumatic fever, AIDs cancer and other forms of acute/chronic health challenges which limit the normal body alertness, strength and vitality (Laker, 2003). In educational settings teachers and educators strive hard to achieve various goals and objectives in the education of children with physical and health impairments.
Some of the goals that teacher set ahead to achieve include; To help children in attaining physical independence, attaining social maturation and self- awareness, attaining mastery of daily living and life skills, academic growth and communication. Significantly it is very necessary for teachers and educators to make wise variations of different methods and strategies in order to increase the social, behavioral and learning capabilities for children with acute impairments (Ray & Susman, 1992). Application of various strategies while handling impaired children helps in measuring adequately the cognitive and functional abilities for such learners in order to design tasks and learning resources appropriate for their abilities and functionality (Loxley & Thomas, 2007).
However, children with impairments learn and grasp concepts better when different methods are applied or used in their learning. Each child has his or her own pace. Different strategies will accommodate different learners at a time (Nelson & John, 2005).
Human personality is highly influenced by the physical wellbeing of the body (Bunton, 2002). Persons who are physically healthy are well poised, outgoing and interactive. They have high confidence and high levels of self concept and confidence (Peny & Deborah, 2003). However, this is not true to their extreme counter parts who have different forms of impairments; chronic, intermittent, terminal or progressive.
Individual adults with sensory, physical and health impairments portray serious behavioral maladjustments in social events; they are highly introverted and less interactive (Jeannerod, 1990). They have low self esteem and hold negative perceptions about their strengths and capabilities. Self image and self concept are the basic components which decorate the human personality. When one holds low esteem about his or her capability his/ her confidence declines, he/she becomes less active, isolated and withdrawn from friends (Westwood, 2003). Adults with physical, sensory and health impairments always portray the above stated personality traits...
