Effects of Technology to Children
Technology refers to as the practical application of scientific knowledge that is helpful to the society, life and environment of human beings. Technology is dynamic, and the changes are evident with the innovations and inventions such as mobile banking. The advances in technology have some negative and positive effects on the society and especially to children. This essay analyzes the effects of technology on children.
The many positive impacts of technology include effectuating education. In this case, the academic performance of children has improved due to the availability of technology (Lin & Atkin, 2007). For example, with the use of computers, children can use the learning resources such as the internet to widen their knowledge and get answers to difficult questions. Education resources such as books are available online, and their access enabled by the internet using electronic gadgets such as the smartphones, tablets, computers and palmtops. Through the enhanced technological advancements, children are updated with the current trends in the world. Actually, technology has affected the performance of children especially in the field of academics and application knowledge.
The other positive impact of technology on children is the improved skills of competition. For instance, computers and smartphones have inbuilt and available games for downloads that enhance competition (Davies, 2010). There are other types of devices such as the PlayStations that contain games. Racing games and others such as Scrabble sharpen the minds of children and facilitate the acquisition of competition skills. The competition skills acquired by the children are applied universally and in real life situation. In additional, technology has also created a platform for improved leisure activities among children. Instead of playing games such as football, children engage in computer games that are also alternatives for leisure.
The advancement of technology also has several negative impacts on the children. One of the negative impacts of technology is the development of health problems. For instance, a child will stick to a computer for excessive hours and as a result he or she develops problems of eyesight as well as back pains (Blake, Winsor & Allen, 2012). The back pains may be caused by the abnormal sitting posture that is adapted by the kids while using computers and tablets. On the same issue of health, children are attracted to leisure activities such as watching television. These activities do not promote physical fitness and, as a result, children over-achieve weight and begin troubling due to their body sizes. The incidences of such health problems will increase with the advancements in technology.
The second negative impact of dynamic technological changes is the reduced performance in academics. Children will spend most of their time using gadgets such as computers, smartphones, and tablets. The effect of the behavior is that the children will lack ample time to concentrate on their studies. The overall impact of excess time on these technological gadgets is reduced performance at school. The use of electronic gadgets for leisure among children creates an addiction that diverts the attention of the kids from their main purpose of education.
The third negative impact of technology is the creation of a poor social relationship. In this case, the same impact of addiction is observed (Asamen, Ellis & Berry, 2008). Due to addiction, children spend most of their time on electronic gadgets such as computers and lack time for maintaining the social life. This time includes time spent with families and close relatives who are essential for the moral growth of children. Instead of meeting with the close relatives, children will communicate via social media and lose the necessary contact between friends and relatives. Eventually, the social life of children is affected, and the same children may develop vices that could be corrected by the close relatives, friends and families.
The growth of technology has also facilitated bad character among children. In this case, the use of internet spoils little children. The internet has contributed to moral degradation among children (Davies, 2010). Children use the internet for alternative purposes such as obtaining adult content instead of helpful purposes such as education. When technology ruins the good morals of children, the di...
