One of the major aspects of the U.S political scene is interest groups. Interest group refers to individuals with shared status, goals or knowledge who often advocate for a specific social or political issue. In the U.S interest groups are typically linked to lobbying groups that often seek to influence public officials to advance their interests. However, not all interest groups are involved in lobbying. Interest groups are sometimes politically inactive and can result in indirect tactics including public opinion polls, research and media campaigns to advance their agenda. One of the most interest groups includes Emily’s List.
Emily’ List
Emily’s List is a U.S based political action committee whose main objective is to help Democratic female candidates who support abortion rights win offices during elections in targeted races. Political action committees are often established and managed by labor unions, corporations, trade associations and membership organizations. Generally, political action committees often donate money to candidates or parties they support but are not run by an individual or by a party. Founded in 1985 by Ellen Malcolm, Emily’s list has grown to encompass millions of liberal feminist women and liberal feminist activists with multi- pronged influence that has significantly changed the U.S congress and the larger American political landscape. While its core mission is to ensure Democratic pro- choice women are elected to office it also focuses on assisting women candidates who have made significant contributions to healthcare, economic rights, education and healthcare. Emily list has raised more than $500 million in various election campaigns to help women candidates and also provides a strategic and technical assistance to women candidates under its support (Influencewatch, 2021). Emily’s list is presently, the largest resource in the U.S for women vying for political posts
Emily’s List Success
The group is among the most effective political organizations in U.S history and has raised more than $ 500 million. It has an expansive grassroots community comprising of more than five million members who often play an instrumental role in ensuring that its Democratic women candidate wage competitive and successful campaigns. Since its founding, the group has helped elected 12 governors, 116 House of Representatives, and 23 senators. Forty percent of women the group has helped win congress seats are from minorities including Latina, African American and Asian American. During its three decade existence, Emily has created and optimized on political opportunities to transform into the current political powerhouse. Emily’s list overarching objective is to harness women’s power to make positive change in politics by electing pro- choice Democratic women.

Emily’s List supports the interest of the majority of American citizens in terms of abortion rights, economic rights and promoting minority interests. Surveys indicate that 47% of Americans support pro- choice rights, which are one Emily List’s core goals (Sadowski, 2020).
