Introduction
Reading can be seen at the ability to look at something carefully and understand the meaning of it; it is the capacity to look and comprehend meanings attached to symbol and characters. Reading can also be referred to as the ability to understand the meaning of anything written and printed in any form and also in any language; it is important to note that people struggle to read. Individuals with this kind of inability are said to have a reading disorder, or it can be termed dyslexia. Dyslexia is a condition common in young children this is as a result of a differences the way the brain processes language information.
There are varied symptoms of dyslexia, and not everyone with this problem has the same symptoms. People with this form of the reading disorder usually are faced with the challenge of recognizing words they already know. The major symptoms of this disorder are as follows trouble with handwriting, difficulty reading quickly, problems reading with correct expression, problems understanding the written word.
The study shall provide information about how struggle people to read, the study will show if they can be helped to overcome their reading difficulties. The study will make use of statistics to buttress the claim. The study shall provide information about the problem faced by children from childhood to adulthood if not assisted to overcome their reading difficulties, the study will also show the solutions available to assist and prevent struggles in reading.
Statistical records
Statistics has shown that a good number people are currently suffering from reading dysfunctions, many children find it difficult to read, it has been estimated that 10 million children worldwide are currently faced with reading disorder,(Drummond, K. (2005). About 10 to 15 percent these children end up dropping out of school only 2% of can complete their four-year college program. Research has shown that about 50% of a young adult who is currently involved in crime or have criminal records having had reading difficulty at a point in their life. Contrary to prevailing believes the National Institute of Child Health and Human Right (USA) have shown in their research that reading dysfunctions and disability affects male and female at the same rate.
They, however, pointed out that this set of children have a higher likelihood of being treated as they will like get teachers and parents attention be misbehaving. The good news is that experts have pointed out that about 90 to 95 percent of children with reading difficulty can be remedied if they receive much need attention early in life. The key to helping people overcome reading dysfunction is that parents and teacher must be informed and aware of this problem in either their students or children and as soon as this problem is detected there is a need for actions to be taken immediately.
People with reading disorder normally have some of these symptoms the student are usually faced with the inability to remember the spelling of a word or read a sentence successfully, as soon as this is noticed the teachers or parents must correctly pinpoint the nature and source of the Childs difficulty. The next step will be to provide targeted information to remedy this difficulty and also provide help to increase the child's skill level, the parent or teachers as the case may be must always accommodate the weakness of the student or child, and then help them to build up their strength and confidence, ( Whitehurst, G. J at el 1994).
It is important to stress that the last step discussed is this session if very important if we must help people overcome reading dysfunction. There is a need to accommodate people weakness and help build up their strength and confidence; this will translate to a gradual understanding of the reading dynamics and better performance. Ill or harsh treatment from teachers or parents to victims of the reading disorder may be detrimental and can lead to total discouragement on the part of the child.
Solution and help for people with reading disorder
The instructor with little children and a group of individuals with the reading disorder can start by showing them that words are made of tiny segments, the method of teaching can be done in a number of ways, first, is to make the children clap in matching sequence as each word sounds. Second, the other method can be done by making children move a plastic tab or any other little teaching aid after each sound is made, (Gregor, P 2002).
This step take place after students have mastered the first step, the instructor proceeds to teach the student what the specific letters of the word in stands for, Directly relating each letter to its corresponding tiny sound the teaching method is usually classified as phonics instruction, the instructor must carry out phonics instruction slowly and at the pace of the child in question. At the completion of the stage and children are now able to read the page of study accurately and with a rapid speed, the student can now be introduced to teaching methods with high emphasis on immersing the student in good literature, (Gregor, P 2002)
There have been controversies on the past about such methods this is because there is an argument about which methods is best between whole language method and phonics, critics of the whole language method are of the notion that it omits the fundamentals needs of the child. Researchers are of the opinion that the use of both of methods will make the greatest gains in reading and posses’ better understanding for the student, (Gregor, P 2002).
Prevention and control of reading disorder
There is a need to help children with the reading disorder as early as possible, these children should be provided with necessary learning and reading skill; there is a need also to identify letter and sound acquisition that will help them overcome such disorders. This should be done early in life before the child begins to face my experience of failures in school because such failure encounter will be detrimental to the learning motivation of such children. This method will be effective if it is enjoyable. It should be provided in the game in the context of the child age brackets. There is abundant evidence that the use of intervention for preventing reading disabilities has proven to be effective and has dramatically reduced the spread of reading disabilities in different countries of the world, (Wilkins, E. M 1989).
The specific prevention method will be discussed below, the first in this categories is heath care prevention this includes the use of health care promotion activities to prevent intervention and prevention of such risk of reading dysfunction. The method put women on medical assistance to prevent any form of reading disabilities in the unborn.
Prenatal a well-child care. This approach adopts the development of conventional health care treatment for children during the state of pregnanc...
