‘If we learn nothing else from this tragedy, we learn that life is short and there is no time for hate’ is an imperative dictum from Sandy Dahl, the wife of a slain pilot during the September 11th, 2001 (9/11) Al Qaeda terrorist attack on the United States. Al Qaeda is a transnational Islamist terrorist group consisting of a network of affiliates across different parts of the globe. Most international intelligence communities consider the group as one of the most potent terrorist groups that threaten the interests of several countries. Besides, the group is considered a potential source of violent domestic extremism. Despite sustained counterterrorism measures that have been taken over the years that appear to minimize the group influence, they have continued to plot attacks seeking exploitation of conflicts in different regions. Al Qaeda's background, ideologies, triggers for attacks, and motivation are explored in this analysis. Further, their strategies and tactics, counterstrategies tactics used against them are amplified in critically evaluating their status of terrorism.
