Germination
Germination can be categorised into two groups’ namely non-dominant and dominant seeds. For the case of non-dominant seeds, the process of germination commences after the seed is provided with water and the surrounding temperature is appropriate. The process of osmosis is mainly one that enables the water entrance into the seeds. The seeds will imbibe water and, as a result, they will expand leading to the hydration of the supplies of food and enzymes.
The enzymes are activated through the hydration process and the metabolic activities of the seeds increases leading to the production of energy for the sustaining the process of growth. The enlargement of the seeds is as the result of the turgor pressure due to water imbibition through osmosis process. The turgor pressure being above the wall pressure of the seeds the seed coat bursts and the growth of the seed initiates. It is hypothesised that the germination will take place if all the conditions necessary for germination are provided but further treatments may be required if the conditions fail to promote growth (Sussman and Halvorson, 1966).
Potential Effects of Treatments
The seeds will be subjected to various treatments that will also interfere or promote the germination process. Hand scarification of the seeds that promote the growth process by the reduction of the overall time required for germination. Scarification physically can also be performed on the seed coat to enhance the process of absorption of water. Boiling water may be used to promote the process of germination if the percentage of the germination process has declined.
