Memories of the past impact people’s present emotional well-being in many ways. These memories, according to Lamia (2017), inform and guide individuals as they steer through the present-day and prepare for the impending lives. Precisely, most current emotions are products of past experiences. For instance, tainted pleasures, refreshing of a person’s emotional pain, and never feeling neutral towards a partner are some of the current emotional products of past experiences.
Memories of the past lead to tainted pleasures in many ways. A bad relationship experience, according to Dodgson (2018), gives a person tainted pleasures. In other words, an individual does not enjoy the things he/she once did due to their connection with a previous partner who hurt him/her (Dodgson, 2018). Re-visiting or re-using things associated with an earlier hurt re-traumatizes a person, a feeling that is abnormal when it persists (Dodgson, 2018). Tainted pleasures can arise from the feeling of a person not wearing a cloth, visiting a place, sleeping in a bed, or using other household items since he/she once shared them with a partner who hurt him/her. Therefore, these tainted pleasures result from memories of the past, which affect people’s present emotional well-being.
