The Broken Windows Policing is an approach used by law enforcement agencies in the United States to punish petty crimes in a way that prevents people from engaging in major crimes. This approach was put forward by George Kelling (a criminologist) and James Wilson (a socialist) in the early 1980s. They both argued that when a window of a building is broken and left unrepaired, all the other windows will be broken too. They were of the premises that a broken windows signals that no one cares about the state of the building. Hence within the society if a person shows the signs of engaging in petty offences he or she should be dealt with as early as possible to prevent him or her from engaging in much major crimes at a later stage. The Broken Windows Policing strategy cannot be effective to various instances since not all major crimes are undertaken by people who commit petty offences. For instance, cybercrime which is estimated to cost individuals and businesses up to $2 Trillion by 2019 cannot be curbed through Broken window policing. This approach majorly targets curbing street crimes
