The existence of diverse cultures, ethnicities, and races from minority groups is recognized through multi-culture. It explains the need to promote and accept the presence of multiple cultures within a given ethnic group. Modern groups majorly organize themselves around the dominant cultures that have constituted them historically. The minority group therefore faces challenges when pursuing their social and political practices, something that the dominant group doesn't experience
Multiculturalism plays a role in responding to matters concerning pluralism in the modern culture and rewarding cultural groups for the exploitation and exclusion in the past. The modern cultural democracy majorly represent people with different viewpoints and practices (Crowder, G., 2013) It is however a challenge to liberal democracy as it doesn’t promote equal treatment to all citizens by the rule of law (Tarvan, G. 2012) This in turn leads to adaptation of a different culture that immigrants participate in.
Radical multiculturalism theories outline that different cultural groups need to improve their involvement in maintain their contributions and identity. In addition, small multicultural groups have advocated for difference leadership, special treatment, and special group rights which in turn lead to enrichment of the dominant cultural group’s .Sociological theorists have argued that preference is given to cultures that cannot hold the pressure to adopt and assimilate other cultures.
This argument draws from the assumption that different cultural groups thrive when they are recognized as part of the community and when not recognized they wither away. (Rattansi, A., 2011) Multiculturalism majorly describes how societies implement their policies by promoting equality yet maintaining diversity. This is majorly achieved when the community creates amalgamating areas that consist of more than one culture. (Bachvarova, M., 2014) Multiculturalism incorporates different methods in which policies and ideologies are addressed. Such ideologies range from advocacy of equality, policy of sustaining cultural diversity
Multiculturalism has had a direct impact on education where curricula from all levels of secondary study has been expanded and revised to contain the needs of diverse groups and cultures. These revisions majorly changed the perspective that overrated contributions of the white European powers and putting little emphasis on contributions by the indigenous black immigrants.
The strategy that focuses on communication and interaction between different cultures can be described as inter-cultureless, while the other strategy focuses majorly on cultural uniqueness and diversity. Multiculturalism is a solution to cultural pluralism, and it compensates different cultural groups that were oppressed and discriminated. By doing this, multiculturalism encourages inclusion and the contribution of the minority members of the group while appreciating their cultural beliefs and practices.
Multiculturalism occurs when two factors are involved; naturally and artificially. When people of a given society migrate, it leads to naturally influenced multiculturalism. Simultaneously, jurisdictions of diverse cultures can be put together through a stated legislative order, as in Canada, England, and France. The advocates of multiculturalism believe in maintaining features of their traditions and cultures.
The non-advocates, on the other hand, blame multiculturalism for threatening social order by constantly undervaluing and influencing predominant culture. ( Crowder, G., 2013) Both salad bowl theory and melting pot theory explain how societies are finally integrated to share different values and norms. The salad bowl theory majorly talks about the heterogeneous society where there is coexistence among the people while some traditions are preserved.
Multiculturalism has however faced objections and claims that it gives privilege to the needs of specific special groups at the expense of the common good. This could possibly lead to inequality .Multiculturalism can also influence the way people of a given community think and carry out themselves. It undermines rights of individuals hence compromising political value and contributions to equality.
It further illustrates that people must not necessarily lose their cultures to be considered among the dominant groups. However, the theory could encourage division in society since it encourages cultural differences that may not be accepted by society as a whole. A multicultural society comprises diverse ethnicities, races, and nationalities who share the same community.
In such communities, their members pass down and share languages, traditions, and unique cultural ways of life. They spread majorly in institutions where the syllabus is crafted to introduce the young generation to a diverse culture's advantages. The education system in such societies illustrates the traditions and history of the minority group. Examples of organizations practicing multiculturalism include Argentina and Canada.
Newspaper articles, television programs, and radio broadcasts in Argentina are published and presented in German, French, Italian, or Portuguese.
