The most famous study by Geert Hofstede (1982) defines national culture as the collective programming of the mind that distinguishes one human group member from another. In his study, he also explained that norms in one culture might not be acceptable in another culture. The UAE has one of the most significant nationalities in the workforce, especially in the private sector. The gender roles and family relationships culture has historically been strictly traditional and steeped in Islamic beliefs and customs. Changes may be occurring among the younger generation as a result of rapid economic development and modernization. The United Arab Emirates contemporary society is experiencing significant problems resulting from the social stratification system, the loss of UAE identity and culture, the changing roles of women in UAE society, and marriage and family structure. Trompenaars and Hampden-Turner (1998, p21) show that other cultural differences in the world could be put into the major dimensions. These dimensions include universalism versus particularism, individualism versus collectivism, masculinity versus femininity, long-term orientation, uncertainty avoidance, and indulgence.
The United Arab Emirates is thought to be a collectivist society. This is evident in a solid long-term commitment to the member 'group,' whether it is a family, extended family, or extended relationships. In a collectivist culture, loyalty is paramount and supersedes most other societal rules and regulations. Society fosters strong relationships where everyone takes responsibility for their group members—offense results in shame and loss of face in collectivist societies. Employer/employee relationships are viewed morally (as a family link), hiring and promotion decisions consider the employee's in-group, and management is the management of groups.
