Taking turns is one very important social skill that everyone should learn. This skill helps us to develop social relationships, which help us to relate well with others. It enables us to listen to each other and have meaningful conversations. Turn-taking can be very challenging for children, as they may not yet understand the value of delayed gratification (Sher, 2019). This is a taught skill, however, and learning it, especially for ASD children is very important. The use of play is one method that children with this condition can learn this skill (Movahedazarhouligh, 2018). The purpose of this paper is to provide a sample play activity that can be organized using simple and easy to find materials- which will not only engage the learner but also impart valuable skills.
Activity and Rationale
“It’s my Turn” activity is intended for 5-year old ASD learner, Clara. It is appropriate as it will be assess her SD needs. Clara enjoys playing with shapes and brightly colored toys and she also responds well to visual cues. Visual learners learn better when pictures are involved. The duration of this lesson plan is 5 minutes so that she can finish it quickly and feel achieved.
