Introduction
After the end of the Civil War and by the mid-20th century, the United States had emerged as the most dominant force in international relations. One real-life international incident that involved the use of military action abroad by the United States is 2010-11 War in Iraq: Operation New Dawn. This operation actually replaced Operation Iraqi Freedom. Another real-life international incident pertaining to the military intervention of the United States refers to the killing of Osama Bin Laden, who was killed by US military forces in Pakistan. The mentioned incidents provide substantial information on controversy existed within the American public regarding the US involvement in these incidents (Cucullu & Fontana, 2011). Moreover, controversy existed within Iraq and Pakistan, being countries directly affected by the respective US involvement. The two real-life international incidents confirm an opinion held by many people around the world about the power of the United States identified as the ‘policeman of the world.’ The objective of this paper is to explore public perceptions regarding the role of the United States as the ‘policeman of the world’ with regards to the incidents in Iraq and Pakistan
The war in Afghanistan can be identified as an important international event that can be traced back to the creation of US foreign policy; this war has been quite persistent (longer than Vietnam); the fact that the United States has been losing ground to the Taliban is indicative of its determination to stretch into Pakistan. Recently, American troops are being attacked at the boarders of Pakistan and Afghanistan at the Tora Bora mountains. The American troops are not there as an army to defend the country as they would in the United States. Their main purpose in Afghanistan is to act as security consultants to the Afghanistan army and law enforcement agencies. This is a vivid way to show just how far US policing has gone. The war is just one of the strategies that the United States of America has for containment (Gaddis, 2005).
Another essential international event that can be linked with the creation of US foreign policy after the Civil War is associated with the Iranian nuclear weapons program, which is still rather strong. On its job of policing the rest of the world the United States have a say on, who or not to carry out nuclear expansion. Iran has wanted to become the tenth Nuclear power state. The President of the United States has put it that Nuclear weapons cannot be trusted in an unstable place such as Iran. He asserts that a place like Iran where terrorism has taken root knot be trusted with an aggressive weapon such as nuclear power, it would be a form of promoting impunity (US Policy, 2013).
Moreover, one aspect of US history since 1865 that has led to the rise of the United States as a world super power policeman is that of the increased importance of capitalism. Another aspect refers to the military dominance of the United States (Berger & Reese, 2010).the United States is known to have one of the best military units in the world. The third aspect suggests the occurrence of an economic boom in the post-war era. These aspects obviously contributed to increasing the power of the United States.
America has taken on a policing role in different places throughout the world. It is important to mention the international incidents pertaining to this policing role, such as the events that occurred in Afghanistan, Syria and South Korea (Scheuerman, 2010). The US involvement in these international incidents is evident, and this creates persistent controversy about the US policing role in the global context.
Some of the driving forces that have fuelled international policy decisions involving the international incidents as above indicated are: the Afghanistan war, Iraq war and US policy on Syria. These three international incident have been the main drive for executing foreign policy. Since most of the population in Afghanistan is under the age of twenty five, the US saw the need to harness this young minds towards development rather than leaving them uneducated and highly susceptible to joining the various outlaw groups (Brinkley, 2013). The efforts have however, not been as fruitful as had been anticipated. Failure is not an option for the US therefore the enlightenment is bound to continue until the goal is realized.
The Iraq war is just an example of the US policing strategies. The US military have close to decade now infiltrated the Iraq boundaries. This is because the previous United States administrations have likened national security to control of oil. Iraq lies on the Persian Gulf which holds almost two thirds of all the oil reserves the world has to offer (Brinkley 2013). The Iraq war is therefore mostly a matter of domination than policing.
